Last Call to Apply to Gerontology Program for Fall 2010 Entry

Hello Colleagues,

We are offering two practice-based courses in gerontology at the Humber College Lakeshore Campus this semester. If you are working with an older population, consider taking one or both of these courses. We still have spots available! Please post for your colleagues & staff.

GERN 501 Gerontology & Diversity
Starts Thursday, September 16th - December 16th
6:30 - 9:30 p.m.
Cost: $420
Professor: Ray Applebaum
Description: This course provides an introduction to the study of aging in Canada within an interdisciplinary context. The impacts of aging will be explored using demographic data to uncover trends in diversity within the older adult population. Theories on aging will be examined with a focus on historical developments in the field of gerontology. The social construction of aging and ageism in society will be debated. Students will have the opportunity to examine their own personal beliefs, culture, values and attitudes towards aging.

A Success Story - Long Term Care

With all the horror stories of late regarding Long Term Care I thought it be nice to post this recent success story written by a good friend of mine on his mother's recent experience at a Southern Ontario home. The names have been modified to protect the family's privacy but the story is absolutely real and a delight!

“Hello, Mr. Stewart? This is St. Aiden’s hospital. I am sorry to inform you that your Mother Grace has fallen and is in hospital” said Nurse Rodriguez, in a compassionate, professional manner. “No broken bones, but your Mom had been lying on the floor in her apartment for several hours before the home care worker discovered her, terrified and unable to lift herself off the ground.”

“Why wasn’t I there? What should I have done to help prevent this situation? What if the home care worker had not visited that day? What now?” If I had been a ‘better’ son, maybe this would not have happened. These thoughts went through my mind, repeatedly, as I made the routine six hour journey from Montreal to Oshawa. I felt overwhelmed by sadness and guilt for what Mom had just experienced.
